2005 WHCoA to Participate in San Antonio Solutions Forum on Civic Engagement

Dorcas R. Hardy, Chairman of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA) Policy Committee will be joined by fellow Policy Committee members Bob Blancato, President, Matz Blancato and Associates, Washington, DC and Thomas Gallagher, President and Founder, Greylock Group, Henderson, Nevada to participate in a Solutions Forum entitled “Civic Engagement: From Awareness to Action,” sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services on September 30, 2005 in San Antonio, TX.

The Policy Committee will hear recommendations from federal, state and local policymakers as well as citizens in the San Antonio area who will provide input to the WHCoA as it relates to civic engagement and volunteerism. Speakers will also discuss disaster preparedness and response and the role that volunteers play during and after disasters.

This input will assist the Policy Committee in their planning for the 2005 WHCoA, scheduled to occur December 11 to 14 in Washington, DC. The mission of the WHCoA, which is held once a decade, is to report policy recommendations to the President and Congress which are designed to help guide national aging policies for the next ten years and beyond. Four previous White House Conferences on Aging have been held.

The 2005 WHCoA will focus on the interests of current and future seniors, including the 78 million baby boomers who will begin to turn 60 in January 2006. The Texas 60-plus are projected to total 8.1 million by 2040, a 193 percent increase from 2000.
