2005 WHCoA Policy Committee Members to Participate in National Congress of American Indians Solutions Forum

Dorcas R. Hardy, Chairman of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA) Policy Committee will be joined by fellow Policy Committee member Bob Blancato to participate in a Solutions Forum hosted by the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and the National Indian Council on Aging (NICOA) on June 13, 2005 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The WHCoA Solutions Forum is being held in conjunction with the Mid-Year Conference of the NCAI taking place from June 12 to 15, 2005.

The Policy Committee will hear innovative recommendations from American Indian and Alaska Native leaders and representatives from across the country. This input will assist the Policy Committee in their planning for the 2005 White House Conference on Aging, scheduled to occur December 11 to 14 in Washington, DC. Although issues related to the Native American population have come up at several pre-WHCoA events, the Forum is the only WHCoA event scheduled focusing solely on the issues and interests of the American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

The mission of the WHCoA, which is held once a decade, is to report policy recommendations to the President and Congress which are designed to help guide national aging policies for the next ten years and beyond.

The 2005 WHCoA will focus on the interests of current and future seniors, including the 78 million baby boomers who will begin to turn 60 in 2006. According to the 2000 Census, only 12% of the Native American population is age 55 or older, compared to the 20% of the general population. This community experiences higher disease rates and lower life expectancy rates than the general U.S. population.
