Committee Meetings, Solutions Forums and Listening Sessions
The Policy Committee of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging provides general direction and guidance for the planning and implementation of the White House Conference on Aging. Among the duties of the Policy Committee are the development of the date, location, theme, agenda, delegate number and selection process and other actions necessary for the convening of the Conference. The Policy Committee is mandated to meet at least six times to discuss these issues and make final decisions. The Policy Committee meetings are open to the public.

On June 14, 2006, the Policy Committee voted to approve the Final Report of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging.
The Final Report of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA) was approved to be transmitted by the Policy Committee of the WHCoA by voice vote on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 on a Conference call that was open to the public. The Final Report will consist of a narrative that contains an Executive Summary, a list of the 50 resolutions adopted by the delegates along with the strongest and strong implementation strategies suggested by the delegates who attended individual implementation strategy sessions on a particular topic at the WHCoA. The narrative will also include a listing of the names of all the delegates, as well as the names of the members of the Policy Committee and Advisory Committee. An Appendix (in CD format) will follow the narrative. It will include all of the Resolutions and Implementation Strategies developed by the Delegates in breakout sessions they elected to attend as well as all the proceedings from the WHCoA and pre-WHCoA events and other WHCoA-related information. The 2005 White House Conference on Aging took place December 11 to 14, 2005 in Washington, D.C.
The report will be transmitted to the President, Congress and the Delegates upon printing and posted on the WHCoA website.

Input Process for the 2005 White House Conference on
Aging
As the baby boom generation approaches retirement
age, it is essential that we examine and develop any needed
policies to ensure that our older population remains a
vital part of society. The 2005 White House Conference
on Aging (WHCoA) is seeking input from a wide array of
stakeholders as we develop an overarching agenda and continue
to plan for the 2005 Conference. For example, how can we
enable both “rising” seniors and mature seniors
to continue to actively participate in and contribute to
personal, community and national well-being? Looking forward
over the next decade and beyond, how can we, as individuals,
businesses, private organizations and government in partnership,
better harness the vast potential that exists within an
aging America?
On October 1, 2004, the Policy
Committee adopted a broad
agenda for the 2005 WHCoA. The agenda items include:
Planning Along the Lifespan
The Workplace of the Future
Our Community
Health and Long Term Living
Social Engagement
Marketplace
The Policy Committee also approved an annotated agenda, which incorporates specific issues identified by its three Subcommittees (Health, Social Support and Economic Security) into the broad agenda, and continues to work to refine those issues through the public input it is receiving across the nation.
Effective April 4, 2005 a new policy will be adopted to clarify the distinction between independently-sponsored events and those that are Federal in nature. This will involve changing the name officially designated events to independent aging agenda events.
Beginning in August 2004, the Policy Committee has attended
numerous Listening Sessions to further inform their discussions
about the key issues around the broad agenda to be addressed
by the 1200 delegates to the 2005 White House Conference
on Aging. These Listening Sessions have been well attended
and have provided much important insight into issues of
concern to older Americans and to the 78 million baby boomers
upon which the Conference is also mandated to focus. Statements
from Listening Sessions can be found on the WHCoA website.
Beginning in February through August 1, 2005, the Policy
Committee will be attending “Solutions Forums” which
will take the place of Listening Sessions. These forums
will help further refine the issues raised in 2004 and
in the annotated agenda adopted by the Policy Committee.
The Committee is seeking creative, thoughtful, innovative
and specific solutions to some of the challenges that we
face as an aging society. Solutions presented may form
the basis for resolutions to be considered by the delegates.
Statements presented at “Solutions Forums” will
be posted on the WHCoA website.
All WHCoA Solutions Forum requests must be approved and
coordinated with the WHCoA, and the date of the Forum will
be determined by the availability of at least one Policy
Committee member who will receive the presentations. Solutions
Forums are to be no longer than 2-3 hours in length. Pre-registered
speakers must present no more than 3-5 minute oral statements
describing proposed "solutions" to issues raised
as part of the WHCoA Agenda. Written electronic statements
(of any length) are required and will be posted on the
WHCoA website upon receipt by the WHCOA following the Forum.

Official White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA) Mini-Conferences
are coordinated by a variety of partner agencies, organizations
and the WHCoA on a key topic area identified by the Policy
Committee. WHCoA Mini-Conferences provide the Policy Committee
with focused information on a specific issue and are intended
to generate recommendations and solutions from the public
and private sectors for use in the development of resolutions
and implementation recommendations for delegates to the
2005 WHCoA. Policy Committee members and/or staff participate
in official WHCoA Mini-Conferences.

This involved changing the name officially designated events to "Independent aging agenda events." All Independent Aging Agenda Events will be acknowledged on the WHCoA website and in the final report of the White House Conference on Aging, and all post-event reports received are posted on the WHCoA website in the section describing each event. The deadline for Independent Aging Agenda Event reports is August 1, 2005. Unfortunately there is no guarantee that reports received after that date will be included in the materials provided to the delegates in time for the Conference but the WHCoA will do its best.
More than 400 events are providing
input to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging
Since August 2004, there have been nearly 400 events held across the country to provide input to the 2005 White House Conference on Aging (WHCoA). These events, involving approximately 130,000 people, have been organized by communities, academic institutions, business and industry, national and local organizations and coalitions, non-profits, faith-based organizations as well as Federal, State and local agencies. The results of these events are important to the WHCoA Policy Committee as it finalizes the Agenda for the Conference and develops resolutions to be voted on by the delegates later this year. The WHCoA has welcomed all input and invited individuals to apply to hold "Independent Aging Agenda Events." Having an event designated as an Independent Aging Agenda Event ensured that the event will be listed on the WHCoA website, used to develop materials for consideration by the Policy Committee for the delegates to the WHCoA, and referenced in the Final WHCoA report presented to the President and the Congress. Re-designation of "Officially Designated
Events"

and new instructions will be disseminated and posted on
the website. The text below is to replace the current section
on the web relating to designated events:
The 2005 White House Conference on Aging continues
to receive a tremendous amount of information, comments,
solutions and general input to the Policy Committee for
purposes of developing the final agenda. This indicates
the degree of excitement and enthusiasm that exists with
regard to the theme chosen for the conference: "The Booming
Dynamics of Aging: From Awareness to Action." We
will continue to seek input from a broad array of stakeholders
and interested parties as the Policy Committee prepares
the 2005 agenda and resolutions for the conference; however,
we need to distinguish independently-sponsored events
from those that are governmental.
Because there has been some confusion in public perception
on the distinction between official federal government
events and activities sponsored by entities independent
of the federal government, events previously known
as officially designated events will be renamed to be
known as, independent aging agenda events.
This change in guidance is designed to clarify that
these events are conducted by entities independent
of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging. As a result,
the name, logo or image of the 2005 White House Conference
on Aging cannot be used. Further, the following disclaimer
must be displayed on materials associated with any
independent aging agenda event:
This "independent aging agenda event" is
designed to provide input to the Policy Committee
of the 2005 White House Conference on Aging. This
event is neither sponsored nor endorsed by the White
House, nor does it in any way represent the policies,
positions, or opinions of the 2005 White House Conference
on Aging or the federal government.
The Conference
continues to welcome information gathered at
these independent aging agenda events.
